How to harvest in the rain

At Wermlands Skogsförråd, we know that mushrooms grow no matter the weather, and we’re always happy to buy your finds, even when it’s pouring rain. Here are a few simple tips to ensure you get the best possible payment for your harvested mushrooms.

1. Protect the mushrooms from rain

Mushrooms that get too wet can quickly lose quality. When picking in the rain, try covering your mushroom basket with a protective material, such as waterproof fabric or a lid. Another tip is to place the basket near trees or under branches to keep it drier while you pick.

2. Choose the right mushrooms

Avoid picking mushrooms that are already waterlogged or slimy. Mushrooms that have absorbed too much water can be challenging to save, and their quality suffers. Instead, aim for specimens that still look firm and fresh, even if they are damp.

How can I tell if a mushroom is waterlogged?

Waterlogged mushrooms can be difficult to salvage and affect both quality and profit. Here are some signs to watch for to avoid them:

  1. Slimy surface: If the mushroom feels slippery or sticky, it’s a sign it has absorbed too much water.
  2. Soft texture: A water-damaged mushroom feels limp or floppy rather than firm and springy.
  3. Color changes: The mushroom may appear darker or translucent, indicating it has taken in too much water.
  4. Musty smell: If the mushroom starts smelling rotten or musty, it’s a clear sign it is water-damaged and beginning to decay.
  5. Loss of shape: The mushroom may have lost its original shape, starting to collapse or become deformed.

3. Deliver to us immediately

Mushrooms retain their quality best when dried in the right environment. We therefore recommend delivering the mushrooms directly after picking rather than attempting to dry them at home. At Wermlands Skogsförråd, we have cooling systems specially designed to handle and dry mushrooms gently.

(In cases of heavy rain, we may need to apply a water content deduction when buying mushrooms to ensure fair pricing for everyone.)

With proper preparation and a bit of extra care, you can make a big difference – both for the quality of your finds and your own earnings. Thank you for helping us make the most of the forest’s bounty, even when the weather is challenging!
